Burlington Firefighters Are Learning to Rescue People Where Ladders Can't Reach

A new rope system means another way down from Burlington's hardest-to-reach rooftops.

Burlington firefighters are mastering a new rooftop rescue technique and passing it on to other stations, WCAX reports.

In July, crews at Station One took a two-day course from a New York rescue team on a simplified rope system for reaching people on buildings where ladders can't reach or a fire truck can't get close.

All five Burlington stations have now been trained, and the gear will ride on Tower One, Ladder Two and Ladder Four. Crews plan to practice every three weeks.

"When students make a mistake in a safe and controlled way, they are more likely to remember not to make that mistake down the line," Capt. Kyle Blake said. Rooftop rescues are rare, but it is good to know the city has one more tool ready.
