**Viruses 2016 – At the Forefront of Virus–Host Interactions** was an international scientific conference held in Basel from the 26th-28th of January.  Having witnessed some **enormous progress in virology research**, along with major breakthroughs in the last few years, the conference offered the perfect platform for **leading virologists** from all around the world to convene and **discuss recent research developments**. The sessions were organised in a theme-based manner, ranging from the discussion of insect and animal viruses to antiviral innate immunity, non-coding RNAs and virus replication organelles.
