# Ding Ding! Memphis' Main Street Trolleys Are Aiming for a Dec. 15 Comeback

Clang, clang, Memphis! The Main Street trolleys could be rolling again before Christmas.

Mayor **Paul Young** says the city has set a target date of **Dec. 15** for the downtown trolleys to return to the tracks. He shared the news in his newsletter, where he said the trolleys have been out of service for too long.

And it has been a while. MATA pulled the old-fashioned steel-wheeled trolleys off the line back in August 2024, as the transit agency faced a big budget gap and costly brake repairs. Since then, a whole lot of Memphians and visitors have walked past those empty tracks on Main Street and wondered when they'd hear that famous bell again.

Young says bringing the trolleys back is part of making downtown a stronger connection point for the whole city, linking residents, workers, businesses and visitors with the places they want to go. He told WREG the date came from the work MATA's Rod Holmes and his team have been doing, and that they felt really confident about it. "I said it out loud because I want us to strive," Young said. "We need deadlines."

Earlier this year, MATA told the City Council it planned to start with four trolleys on Main Street. Transit officials say they're now completing the testing and safety steps needed to bring "this historic service" back to Memphis, and they thanked TDOT for its partnership.

One honest note: Dec. 15 is a target, not a promise, and the mayor says there's still work to do. But if it all comes together, downtown's holiday season could come with a soundtrack of trolley bells, and a ride down Main Street to see the lights might be back on the menu.

We'll be first in line with a hot chocolate in hand.
