# The Big Blue Box Gets a Second Act: Living Spaces Buys Memphis' Former IKEA

Good news, Cordova: the big blue box is getting a sofa-sized second act.

California-based furniture retailer **Living Spaces** has bought the former IKEA store at 7900 IKEA Way, near Wolfchase, for **$22 million**, according to a deed filed with the Shelby County Register of Deeds.

That ends a fun little whodunit. In late September, the sale was confirmed, but the buyer asked to stay anonymous. Now the name is on the paperwork.

Quick refresher: IKEA opened in Cordova in December 2016 as Tennessee's first IKEA and closed in early May after almost 10 years. The building is huge, about 271,000 square feet on a 29-acre site near Germantown Parkway and I-40. That's a lot of room for couches.

So who's moving in? Living Spaces has about 40 stores in nine states. It sells everything from "modern minimalist and chic contemporary to cozy farmhouse and classic traditional styles," and it offers same-day delivery with assembly. It'll set the furniture up in the room you pick, too. (Translation: no Allen keys required.)

Living Spaces isn't new to Memphis, either. The retailer filed a site plan for a big Cordova store near I-40 and Appling Road a few years ago but never built it. Now it has landed a much bigger box.

Bonus fun fact: at the Oct. 6 City Council meeting, a motion came up to rename IKEA Way to **Living Spaces Way**. It was tabled for now, so watch this space.

There's no word yet on an opening date or what the store will look like inside. But the empty blue building now has a future, and Cordova shoppers have something to look forward to.

We'll miss the meatballs. We won't miss the empty parking lot.
