A year ago, the Memphis Safe Task Force rolled out with a big promise and an even bigger spotlight. Now the receipts are in — and they point in the right direction.
Newly calculated data comparing crime from before and after the task force became operational shows rates falling further once it hit the streets. The decline was already underway; the task force era has pushed it along.
Numbers don't tell the whole story — anyone who lives here knows safety is felt block by block, not spreadsheet by spreadsheet. But direction matters. And for a city that's spent years demanding better, a sustained downward trend is something to take seriously.
There's still work to do. Nobody's declaring victory. But Memphis asked for action, got a task force, and the early returns say it's moving the needle.
One year in, the trend is our friend. Let's keep it that way.
