Illustrative image. Sacramento has set new rules for how city police handle calls tied to federal immigration agents. City Manager Maraskeshia Smith directed interim Police Chief Bales that officers should not act as a "security detail" for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, The Sacramento Bee reports. Under the directive, officers won't be sent just because people are following, watching, photographing or recording ICE agents. Police can still respond to real threats or crimes, but they won't provide escorts, surveillance, traffic or crowd control, or other support that helps immigration enforcement.
