The city's biggest clean-energy bet is officially up and running. Little Rock cut the ribbon Friday, Oct. 30, on a new solar array at the Port of Little Rock. The facility is rated at 6.3 megawatts (DC), or 4.9 megawatts (AC). City officials say it should produce enough power each year to cover roughly 70% of the electricity used by city government, trimming the utility bill by close to $1 million annually. The $12 million project was built with North Little Rock-based Scenic Hill Solar and came in more than $870,000 under budget, according to FOX16. Scenic Hill CEO Bill Halter said the array cuts the city's exposure to volatile global fuel markets. Mayor Frank Scott Jr. framed the project as a win for both taxpayers and the environment, and a key step toward the city's goal of running municipal operations entirely on clean energy by 2030. Next up is the planned Clinton Sustainable Energy District downtown, which is set to include a district energy system and a separate 5-megawatt array.
