Using mobile marketing for your events is an effective promotions channel for sending your event details directly to the pocket of your potential attendees. But are you aware of the best practices around mobile marketing? We’ve got a couple of Do’s and Don’ts for your mobile promotions…
Do test mobile marketing for your events – and add a powerful promotion channel to your event marketing mix. Mobile is a social connection.
Don’t assume everyone has a smart phone or internet access. If you are sending a link to a mobile flyer, in 9 cases out of ten, your recipient will be able to see the content – but for that tenth person, make sure your text message contains all of the most important information by itself.
Do keep your messages short and to the point. A single text message can be up to 140 characters in length. As above, although smart phones can receive longer messages, older phones may split your message into multiple texts, ruining the effect of your event marketing message!
Don’t spam your database. Focus on quality updates rather than quantity of messages. Do you really need to remind people about the event and send them a drinks offer separately? Combine them into one message.
Do include a way for subscribers to opt out of your mobile marketing. If you are using a third party software to send your mobile messages, subscribers simply need to reply with the word STOP and they will automatically be removed from future messages. If you are sending text messages from your own phone, you will need to manually remove anyone who unsubscribes from your contact list if they request it.
Don’t text people who have not specifically opted in to receive mobile marketing from you. It’s best to create a separate database of people who are interested in receiving mobile communication about your events, rather than have one database for all of your mobile and email contacts.
Do include a link to more information. Although not everyone will be able to access the web from their phone, most people will so be sure to include a link to either a mobile flyer (accessible from all phones) or a web page (accessible from smart phones) with the details you couldn’t include in your text message.
Don’t go it alone, marketing an event can be daunting at first especially if you don’t know where to start, and even more so if your knowledge of mobile marketing is limited. Do your research, for a breakdown read our recent post How to get connected with Mobile Marketing.
